Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Albania over a period. Published by the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT), it is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of the Albanian economy.
How it's calculated
INSTAT estimates it via the expenditure, output and income approaches, which must reconcile. It is released in levels and as year-on-year (YoY) growth, with a gradual adoption of European methodological standards.
Market implications
It is the cyclical reference for a developing, EU-candidate economy heavily reliant on tourism, energy and remittances. Solid growth reinforces the convergence path and debt sustainability, while a slowdown would strain the public finances.
Limitations
It is released with a considerable lag and with frequent revisions typical of a developing statistical system. The weight of the informal economy and remittances means official GDP only partly captures real activity, and it shows tourism-driven seasonality.
