Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
It is the average annual inflation rate for Algeria: the average change in consumer prices over the year rather than the year-end figure. It reflects the average rise in the household basket of goods and services across the full year.
How it's calculated
It is obtained by comparing the annual average consumer price index level with that of the previous year, based on regular price collection across a sample weighted by household spending. Comparable cross-country series come from the IMF's annual estimates.
Market implications
Inflation shapes purchasing power, consumption and economic policy. In Algeria, a hydrocarbon exporter, it is closely tied to energy prices, public spending and the path of the dinar, and is a social-stability factor watched by the authorities.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency figure subject to revision. As an annual average it smooths intra-year peaks and can be slow to reflect turning points, while administered prices and food subsidies can push the official reading away from perceived inflation.
