Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Algeria over a year. It is the broadest gauge of its economy, published by the National Statistics Office (ONS).
How it's calculated
It is estimated from the expenditure, output and income sides under international standards, distinguishing the hydrocarbons sector from the rest. It is released in real terms, with the usual reading being the year-on-year (YoY) change in total and non-oil GDP.
Market implications
It reflects the pulse of an economy heavily reliant on oil and gas; non-oil GDP measures diversification progress. A weak reading strains public finances, reserves and the currency (the dinar), and shapes the policy of the Bank of Algeria.
Limitations
It is released with a considerable lag and subject to revisions, and figures swing sharply with hydrocarbon output and prices. Lower statistical transparency and a large informal economy call for caution when interpreting the data.
