Release En torno a mediados del mes siguiente al periodo de referencia (suele haber un dato preliminar y otro definitivo).
What it isArgentina's average annual inflation: the change over the year in the prices of a representative basket of goods and services bought by households, measured by the consumer price index (CPI) compiled by INDEC. It reflects the loss of purchasing power in a country with a history of very high inflation.
How it's calculatedINDEC regularly surveys the prices of a broad basket of products across the country and computes an index weighted by household spending. The monthly CPI yields the year-on-year rate, and average annual inflation summarises how prices evolved over the year.
Market implicationsInflation is Argentina's most closely watched macroeconomic variable and drives the Central Bank's (BCRA) policy, the peso's exchange rate, wages and contracts. A worse-than-expected print deepens depreciation expectations and erodes purchasing power, while a slowdown signals stabilisation.
LimitationsThe series has suffered methodological breaks and past credibility concerns (the intervention of INDEC), which complicates historical comparisons. Under very high inflation, relative prices shift quickly and the basket can become outdated between revisions.
