What it isTotal tax revenue measures the monthly fiscal receipts collected by Argentina's tax authority (ARCA, formerly AFIP): VAT, income tax, excise duties, import and export tariffs and the remaining national taxes. It is an indicator of both economic activity and tax compliance.
How it's calculatedARCA publishes the monthly breakdown by tax and the Ministry of Economy consolidates the series of total revenue, with monthly and year-on-year growth rates, on the open data portal. The figure is expressed in current pesos.
Market implicationsRevenue rising faster than inflation reflects an expanding economy and strengthens the government's fiscal position; if it lags inflation, it implies a real fall in receipts that pressures the fiscal balance, a central plank of the adjustment programme and of the IMF relationship.
LimitationsThe nominal peso figure must be read alongside inflation over the period, as nominal growth can mask a real decline. There is also significant seasonality (bonus payments, clustered filing deadlines) that distorts month-on-month comparisons.
