Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
The unemployment rate is the share of jobless people in Armenia's total labour force. Published by the Statistical Committee of Armenia, it is the main indicator of the state of the labour market and of the economy's ability to create jobs. It is released on an annual basis.
How it's calculated
It is drawn from the Labour Force Survey of a large sample of households, using internationally comparable ILO criteria. An unemployed person is one without a job who is available for and actively seeking work. It is expressed as an annual percentage of the labour force.
Market implications
Its trend reflects the momentum of the Armenian economy. A strong labour market boosts consumption and household income and is a key variable for the Central Bank of Armenia. High emigration and remittances shape labour supply and the reading of the indicator.
Limitations
Being annual, it is a low-frequency figure that captures cyclical changes with a lag. It is worth distinguishing whether the rate moves because of labour demand or factors such as emigration or underemployment, which is widespread in the informal economy. Survey data are subject to sampling error and revisions.
