About this indicator

SourceAustralian Bureau of Statistics
FrequencyTrimestral
Release En torno a mediados del mes siguiente al periodo de referencia (suele haber un dato preliminar y otro definitivo).
What it isMeasures the change in the price of a representative basket of goods and services bought by Australian households. It is the main gauge of inflation in Australia and is published quarterly by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
How it's calculatedIt is built by collecting prices for a broad sample of products across the eight capital cities and weighting them by household spending to construct an index with a base year that is periodically revised. Quarterly and year-on-year changes are tracked.
Market implicationsIt is the key inflation reading for the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), which targets 2-3%. A hotter-than-expected print pushes rate expectations higher and tends to support the Australian dollar, while a softer one eases them.
LimitationsIt only captures the prices in the defined basket, and its quarterly frequency gives less timeliness than in other countries; for the underlying trend the market focuses on core measures, notably the trimmed mean, which strips out the most volatile items.
