What it is
ANZ-Indeed Australian Job Ads tracks the monthly change in the number of job vacancies advertised in Australia. It is produced by ANZ Research using data from the Indeed jobs portal. It is not an official statistic: the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes its own vacancies, but only quarterly and with a much longer lag.
How it's calculated
A seasonally adjusted count of online job advertisements, released as a percentage change from the previous month. The release itself routinely revises the prior month's figure.
Market implications
It is a leading gauge of labour demand: it anticipates the employment and unemployment figures the ABS releases weeks later, so markets use it to gauge the path of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). A sustained rise points to a tight labour market and rates staying higher for longer.
Limitations
It is a narrow private series (online adverts only), sensitive to shifts in the source's coverage and behaviour, and it misses hiring through other channels. It is revised each month and does not map exactly onto the ABS official vacancies.
