What it is
The S&P Global Australia Composite PMI blends manufacturing output and services activity into a single diffusion index of the private sector. A reading above 50 signals expanding activity; below 50, contraction.
How it's calculated
A weighted average of the Manufacturing Output Index and the Services Business Activity Index, with weights based on each sector's share of GDP. It is drawn from a monthly survey of purchasing managers and seasonally adjusted.
Market implications
It is a leading indicator of Australia's cycle, released ahead of the national accounts. Markets treat it as the first read on activity each month, with an impact on the Australian dollar and on RBA expectations.
Limitations
A qualitative survey: it measures the direction of change, not its size. The sample is private firms and the seasonal adjustment factors are revised from time to time.
