What it is
Australia's Manufacturing PMI is a diffusion index produced by S&P Global Market Intelligence from a monthly survey of purchasing managers in manufacturing. A reading above 50 signals expansion versus the previous month; below 50, contraction.
How it's calculated
A weighted composite of five sub-indices: new orders (30%), output (25%), employment (20%), suppliers' delivery times (15%) and stocks of purchases (10%). The data are seasonally adjusted.
Market implications
A leading indicator of the cycle: it is released before the national accounts and official industrial production, and markets treat it as the first read of the month. A strong print supports the Australian dollar and RBA rate expectations; a weak one does the opposite.
Limitations
A qualitative survey that measures the direction of change, not its magnitude. The sample is made up of private firms and the seasonal adjustment factors are revised from time to time. Manufacturing is a small share of Australian GDP.
