What it is
Australia's Services PMI (S&P Global Market Intelligence, Business Activity Index) is a diffusion index built from a monthly survey of purchasing managers in the services sector. A reading above 50 signals expanding activity; below 50, contraction.
How it's calculated
A diffusion index of business activity in services, based on a single question about the change versus the previous month. The data are seasonally adjusted.
Market implications
A leading indicator of the cycle: it is released before the national accounts and official output data, and markets treat it as the first read of the month. As services dominate Australian GDP, a strong reading supports the Australian dollar and RBA rate expectations.
Limitations
A qualitative survey that measures the direction of change, not its magnitude. The sample is made up of private firms and the seasonal adjustment factors are revised from time to time.
