About this indicator

SourceAustralian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
FrequencyTrimestral
Release Aprox. 4-5 semanas tras el cierre del trimestre de referencia (calendario ABS)
What it isThe Producer Price Index (Final Demand) measures the change in the prices Australian producers receive for their goods and services at the final stage of the distribution chain, before reaching the consumer. Published by the ABS, it is a leading indicator of inflationary pressures.
How it's calculatedA chained Laspeyres index over a basket of selling prices (excluding exports) of the main producing industries, weighted by their share of value added. The ABS publishes it quarterly, together with the quarterly and year-on-year changes.
Market implicationsA rise in the PPI foreshadows upward pressure on the CPI, as production costs tend to pass through to consumer prices with a lag. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) watches it as an early signal of inflation.
LimitationsIt excludes exports and retail and wholesale margins; it reflects only producers' selling prices, not the final cost to the consumer, so its pass-through to the CPI is partial and uncertain.
