Monthly
Release
Roughly one to two months after the reference quarter closes (advance estimate and final figure).
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the total value of all goods and services produced in Austria over a period and is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of growth of the Austrian economy. It is published by Statistik Austria, with early flash estimates from the WIFO research institute.
How it's calculated
Estimated via the demand, output and income approaches, which must reconcile. Statistik Austria publishes a seasonally adjusted quarterly series, reporting the quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) and year-on-year (YoY) changes in real terms.
Market implications
It is the main benchmark for assessing Austria's business cycle and, as a euro area member, feeds the aggregate reading watched by the ECB. Stronger-than-expected growth points to firmer demand and price pressures; a weaker print opens the door to stimulus.
Limitations
It is released several weeks after the reference period and the flash estimate is revised in later readings, so the first figure is not final. As a small, open economy it is highly sensitive to conditions in the euro area and Germany.
