What it is
Records the number of inhabitants in Bangladesh and how it changes over time. Published by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), it is a structural indicator underpinning many economic and social ratios (GDP per capita, density, per-head rates, etc.).
How it's calculated
The BBS derives the figure from population censuses and statistics on births, deaths and net migration, updating the population to an annual reference date. Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world.
Market implications
Demographic trends shape potential growth, the labour market, consumption and public spending. In Bangladesh, a large and still young population offers a demographic dividend but also demands large-scale job creation.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency figure; inter-census estimates are subject to revision once new censuses arrive. Census coverage in such a populous country with heavy labour emigration carries a wider margin of error.
