Unemployment rate (annual) in Belarus

Measures the share of Belarus's labour force that is without a job, available for work and seeking employment. It is compiled by the National Statistical Committee (Belstat) and reflects a labour market still dominated by the state sector.

Derived from the labour force survey under ILO criteria as the unemployed over the labour force times 100, as an annual average. It should be distinguished from registered unemployment, traditionally very low because claiming minimal benefits requires formal registration.

The figure helps read the pulse of a heavily managed economy exposed to sanctions and to Russian conditions. A rise would signal weakness and pressure on the Belarusian rouble; the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus watches employment alongside inflation when setting rates.

Registered unemployment understates true joblessness, while the ILO survey tends to show higher figures. Underemployment and low-productivity jobs in state firms persist and are not captured by the rate, on top of sampling error and revisions.
