About this indicator

Source
Statbel
Frequency
Quarterly
Release
Roughly one to two months after the reference quarter closes (advance estimate and final figure).
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Belgium over a period. It is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of growth of the Belgian economy, published by the National Bank of Belgium together with Statbel.
How it's calculated
It is compiled under the European ESA 2010 framework and can be derived from the expenditure, output and income sides, which should match. It is released in volume terms (adjusted for prices and seasonality) and is typically tracked as quarterly (QoQ) and year-on-year (YoY) change, with a flash estimate and later revisions.
Market implications
It is the key reference for assessing Belgium's cycle and shapes employment, tax revenue and market expectations. As a euro area member, stronger-than-expected growth reinforces the case for less accommodative ECB policy and tends to support the euro.
Limitations
It is released with a lag of several weeks and the flash estimate is revised in later publications, so the first reading is not final. Seasonal and price adjustments can shift the signal, and an open economy like Belgium's is sensitive to external trade.
