How it's calculated
It is derived from the National Register and censuses, updated with births, deaths and net migration. A figure referring to 1 January of each year is usually provided.

Limitations
It is a low-frequency figure compared with market indicators, and numbers between updates are revisable estimates. Net migration is the hardest component to measure precisely.
