Release
Around one to two months after the reference period.
What it is
Belgium's Trade Balance captures the value of goods traded between Belgian residents and the rest of the world over a period, measured as exports minus imports. It reflects external trade activity in one of the euro area's most open economies.
How it's calculated
Calculated as the difference between the value of exports and imports recorded in external trade statistics. A positive balance is a trade surplus and a negative one a deficit; it is usually reported in millions of euros.
Market implications
The trade balance is a component of GDP, so it feeds into growth, and it gauges the competitiveness of the Belgian economy, which is closely tied to trade with its euro-area partners. A sustained surplus supports the currency and national income.
Limitations
The figures are not final: each release tends to revise earlier periods, the data come with a lag, and the balance is sensitive to one-off swings in energy prices or large contracts that can distort the monthly reading.
