Release
Published annually, referring to a specific date in the year.
What it is
Records the number of inhabitants of Bosnia and Herzegovina and how it changes over time. It is a structural indicator underpinning many economic and social ratios (GDP per capita, density, per-head rates). It is compiled by the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BHAS).
How it's calculated
It is derived from population censuses and vital and migration statistics, updated with births, deaths and net migration. An annual reference population figure is provided between censuses.
Market implications
Demographic trends shape potential growth, the labour market, consumption and public spending. In Bosnia and Herzegovina strong emigration and ageing shrink the working-age population and put pressure on public finances and the pension system.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency figure and intercensal estimates are subject to revision. Recent large-scale emigration is hard to quantify in real time, so figures between censuses may overstate the resident population.
