Monthly
Release
Roughly one to two months after the reference quarter closes (advance estimate and final figure).
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Bulgaria over a period. Published by the National Statistical Institute (NSI), it is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of the Bulgarian economy.
How it's calculated
The NSI estimates it via the expenditure, output and income approaches, which must reconcile, using seasonally adjusted data. It is released in levels and as quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) and year-on-year (YoY) growth, in line with Eurostat's ESA methodology.
Market implications
It is the main reference for judging Bulgaria's business cycle and its convergence with the euro area, which the country is seeking to join. Solid growth supports revenues and the euro-adoption path, while a slowdown would constrain fiscal policy.
Limitations
It is released several weeks after the reference period and the first (flash) estimates are revised in later publications, so the initial figure is not final. Bulgaria's relatively small, open economy shows quarterly volatility driven by trade and investment.
