What it is
Records the number of inhabitants of Bulgaria and how it changes over time. It is a structural indicator underpinning many economic and social ratios (GDP per capita, density, per-head rates). It is compiled by the National Statistical Institute (NSI).
How it's calculated
It is derived from population censuses and administrative registers, updated with births, deaths and net migration in line with European methodology. An annual reference population figure is provided between censuses.
Market implications
Demographic trends shape potential growth, the labour market, consumption and spending on pensions and healthcare. Bulgaria faces one of the sharpest demographic declines in the EU owing to low birth rates and emigration, which weighs on its potential growth.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency figure and intercensal estimates are subject to revision. Migration flows within the EU are hard to capture accurately, so figures between censuses may need upward or downward adjustment.
