About this indicator

Source
Statistics Canada
Frequency
Quarterly
Release
Some two to five months after the reference quarter ends (08:30 Toronto time)
What it is
Measures the share of installed productive capacity that Canadian industries are actually using during the quarter. Published by Statistics Canada, it covers total industry, including manufacturing, mining, energy and construction.
How it's calculated
Statistics Canada compares each industry's actual output with its maximum sustainable capacity (the Industrial Capacity Utilisation Rate), reporting the result as a seasonally adjusted percentage drawn from surveys and production accounts.
Market implications
A high and rising rate tends to precede inflationary pressure and fresh investment in capacity, while a low reading points to slack and weak industrial demand. It is a gauge the Bank of Canada watches when setting interest rates.
Limitations
It is released with a considerable lag after the reference quarter, and the national aggregate can mask large differences between sectors, such as energy versus light manufacturing. It is also subject to revision.
