About this indicator

SourceStatistics Canada
FrequencyMonthly
Release Unos 18 dias despues del cierre del mes de referencia (junto con el IPP industrial, 08:30 hora de Toronto)
What it isMeasures the change in the prices Canadian producers pay for the raw materials they buy for production: energy, metals and minerals, agricultural products, timber and fish. Published by Statistics Canada, it should not be confused with the Bank of Canada's own commodity price index (BCPI).
How it's calculatedStatistics Canada compiles a weighted raw-materials price index (not seasonally adjusted) from market prices for energy, metals, agricultural, forestry and fishery products. It is released alongside the Industrial Product Price Index (IPPI) in the same monthly note (table 18-10-0268), with the month-on-month change watched.
Market implicationsA rise in the index foreshadows cost pressures for manufacturers and, with a lag, in producer and consumer prices. It is highly sensitive to oil and metals prices and serves as an early signal of inflation in the production chain.
LimitationsIt is a non-seasonally-adjusted index and very volatile month to month given its exposure to commodities, especially energy. It should not be confused with the Bank of Canada's BCPI, which uses a different methodology and does not reproduce the same values.
