About this indicator

SourceStatistics Canada
FrequencyMensual
Release Aproximadamente un mes después del periodo de referencia.
What it isCaptures the value and number of building permits issued in Canada during the month, that is, the authorisations to start residential and non-residential construction. It is a leading indicator of future activity in the sector, published by Statistics Canada.
How it's calculatedStatistics Canada compiles it from the reports of the municipalities that issue the permits. The value of authorised construction and the number of dwellings are usually released, seasonally adjusted and expressed as a change from the previous month.
Market implicationsPermits anticipate the start of new construction and, with it, the path of building activity, a sector with a large impact on employment, income and ancillary industries. A strong reading points to greater residential investment and tends to support the Canadian dollar.
LimitationsConstruction does not always begin in the same month the permit is issued, so the indicator does not exactly reflect actual starts. It is volatile, heavily swayed by one-off large non-residential projects, and subject to revisions.
