About this indicator

SourceStatistics Canada
FrequencyMensual
Release En torno a mediados del mes siguiente al periodo de referencia (suele haber un dato preliminar y otro definitivo).
What it isCanada's CPI measures the change in the prices of a representative basket of goods and services bought by the country's households. Published by Statistics Canada, it is the main gauge of inflation and the reference for updating wages, pensions and contracts.
How it's calculatedStatistics Canada collects prices from a broad sample of outlets and regions and weights them by household spending, building an index with a base year that is updated periodically. Monthly and year-on-year changes are published.
Market implicationsInflation is the central reference for Bank of Canada monetary policy when setting interest rates. A hotter-than-expected print tends to push rates and the Canadian dollar higher, while a softer one opens the door to cuts.
LimitationsIt only tracks the prices in the defined basket, so it does not capture every price in the economy; to read the underlying trend the Bank of Canada follows core measures (CPI-trim and CPI-median) that strip out the most volatile components.
