What it is
Measures the number of people receiving regular Employment Insurance benefits in Canada, referring to roughly a month after involuntary job loss. Published by Statistics Canada, it acts as a barometer of the labour market.
How it's calculated
Statistics Canada releases the monthly count of regular EI beneficiaries, seasonally adjusted, drawn from the administrative records of Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) / Service Canada. The headline series is the national total, both sexes, aged 15 and over (table 14-10-0011-01).
Market implications
A fall in the number of beneficiaries signals a strengthening labour market, while a rise points to weakening and greater risk of slowing consumption. It is watched alongside the unemployment rate to anticipate Bank of Canada decisions.
Limitations
It is administrative data, not a survey: it captures only those entitled to and claiming EI, excluding the self-employed, workers with insufficient contributions and those who have exhausted benefits. It is subject to retroactive seasonal revisions.
