Statistics Canada (StatCan)
Frequency
Monthly
Release
Around one or two months after the reference period (the same day as the trade balance and exports).
What it is
Measures the total value of goods Canada buys from the rest of the world in a month. It is the second component of the trade balance, alongside exports, and is published by Statistics Canada.
How it's calculated
Taken from the monthly International merchandise trade release, on a balance-of-payments basis and seasonally adjusted, covering goods trade with all countries and expressed in Canadian dollars.
Market implications
A rise in imports can reflect strong domestic demand but worsens the trade balance; together with exports it determines the trade balance that adds to or subtracts from Canada's GDP.
Limitations
The figures are preliminary and revised later; on their own they do not separate price effects from volume effects.
