About this indicator

SourceStatistics Canada (StatCan)
FrequencyMonthly
Release Aprox. 3-4 semanas tras el cierre del mes de referencia, sobre el dia 18-23 del mes siguiente, 08:30 hora este de Canada (ET)
What it isMeasures the change in prices Canadian industrial producers charge for their goods in the domestic market (first sale, ex-factory), excluding indirect taxes and transport. It covers manufactured, agricultural, forestry, fishery, mining and utility goods sold by establishments located in Canada, and is published by Statistics Canada.
How it's calculatedA chained Laspeyres index compiled by Statistics Canada from prices collected monthly from a sample of producers by major product group (NAPCS classification). The total index (IPPI) and the total excluding energy and petroleum products are published (table 18-10-0265), with month-on-month and year-on-year changes.
Market implicationsIt is a leading indicator of inflationary pressure: producer-price moves tend to feed through to consumer prices with a lag. The Bank of Canada watches it as a signal of inflation in the production chain, and it also matters for corporate margins and the Canadian dollar.
LimitationsIt is volatile month to month given its exposure to commodities and energy, though an ex-energy series exists. It excludes final consumer services and imports and is subject to revision in later releases.
