Release Aproximadamente dos meses después del cierre del trimestre de referencia.
What it isCanada's wages indicator measures the change in the pay received by workers (gross wages and salaries). Compiled by Statistics Canada, it is a key gauge of household income and of cost-push inflation.
How it's calculatedIt is drawn from Statistics Canada's employment and payroll surveys and is usually expressed as the change in hourly or ordinary earnings, on a year-on-year basis.
Market implicationsWages are both the main component of household income and a large share of business costs, so their path shapes consumption and the inflationary pressures the Bank of Canada watches when setting rates. Strong wage growth tends to support the Canadian dollar.
LimitationsThe figure is sensitive to the composition of employment (shifts in the mix of sectors and hours can move the average without individual pay rising) and to seasonal factors, and it is subject to revision.
