What it is
Fixed Asset Investment (excluding rural households) captures spending on construction, equipment and other capital assets across China, accumulated from the start of the year and expressed as a year-on-year change (YTD YoY). It is published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
How it's calculated
The NBS totals fixed asset investment by firms, government and developers above a minimum threshold, and reports the year-on-year change of the year-to-date cumulative figure up to the reference month, rather than the single month.
Market implications
Investment is a central engine of Chinese growth, closely tied to infrastructure and property. A slowdown signals weak domestic demand and tends to reinforce expectations of Beijing stimulus; it moves commodity prices and China-linked currencies such as the AUD.
Limitations
As a year-to-date year-on-year figure it smooths swings in any single month and makes turning points hard to spot; the quality and comparability of Chinese data are debated, and the weight of property distorts the reading.
