What it is
China's population records the number of inhabitants and its change over time. It is a structural indicator, the basis for many economic and social ratios (GDP per capita, density, per-head rates).
How it's calculated
It is published annually by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), drawing on the decennial census and on birth and death statistics. The figure is given for a year-end reference date.
Market implications
Demographics shape potential growth, the available workforce, consumption and pension and health spending. In China, ageing and the falling population are a first-order structural challenge for long-run growth.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency figure and inter-census estimates are subject to revision. The reliability of Chinese demographic statistics has been questioned, particularly on birth counts and provincial figures.
