What it is
Records the number of inhabitants of Colombia and how it changes over time. It is a structural indicator underpinning many economic and social ratios (GDP per capita, density, per-head rates). It is compiled by the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE).
How it's calculated
It is derived from population and housing censuses and vital and migration statistics, updated with births, deaths and net migration. DANE provides projections and an annual reference population figure between censuses.
Market implications
Demographic trends shape potential growth, the labour market, consumption and public spending. For Colombia it is central to designing social policy; the arrival of migrants from Venezuela has significantly influenced the figures in recent years.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency figure and intercensal estimates are subject to revision. Large recent migration flows are hard to quantify accurately, so projections may be adjusted as better data become available.
