What it is
Records the number of inhabitants in Costa Rica and how it changes over time. Published by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), it is a structural indicator underpinning many economic and social ratios (GDP per capita, density, per-head rates, etc.).
How it's calculated
The INEC derives the figure from population censuses and statistics on births, deaths and net migration, updating the population to an annual reference date. Birth rates have eased and ageing is gradually advancing.
Market implications
Demographic trends shape potential growth, the labour market, consumption and spending on pensions and healthcare. In Costa Rica, the shift towards an older population poses long-term sustainability challenges.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency figure; inter-census estimates are subject to revision once new censuses or better migration data arrive. Recent migration flows are hard to measure precisely.
