Release
Published annually, referring to a specific date in the year.
What it is
Records the number of inhabitants of Cyprus and how it changes over time. It is a structural indicator underpinning many economic and social ratios (GDP per capita, density, per-head rates). It is compiled by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CyStat).
How it's calculated
It is derived from population censuses and administrative registers, updated with births, deaths and net migration in line with European methodology. An annual reference population figure is provided between censuses.
Market implications
Demographic trends shape potential growth, the labour market, consumption and public spending. In Cyprus, a small open economy, immigration and the foreign population linked to services and tourism have an appreciable influence on the figures.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency figure and intercensal estimates are subject to revision. The island's division complicates statistical coverage, and migration flows are hard to capture accurately between censuses.
