What it isThe level of foreign exchange reserves held by Danmarks Nationalbank, Denmark's central bank, expressed in billions of Danish kroner (DKK). These reserves are the main tool with which the bank defends the krone's fixed peg to the euro within the ERM II mechanism.
How it's calculatedReported in the bank's monthly release on foreign exchange, liquidity and its balance sheet, which details the end-of-month reserve level and its change from the prior month, split between net currency intervention and central government debt operations.
Market implicationsA sharp fall in reserves can signal that the central bank is intervening to defend the krone (selling foreign currency and buying DKK) under downward pressure; a sustained rise reflects the opposite or capital inflows. It is the most direct window onto the defence of the peg.
LimitationsThe monthly level does not always distinguish between currency intervention and Danish Treasury debt management operations, which can produce moves not directly tied to exchange rate policy.
