Release
Around one to two months after the reference period.
What it is
The trade balance records the value of goods traded between Denmark and the rest of the world over a period, measured as the difference between exports and imports. It reflects the country's external trade activity.
How it's calculated
Statistics Denmark (Danmarks Statistik) derives it as the difference between the value of exports and imports recorded in external trade statistics, in Danish kroner. A positive balance is a surplus, a negative one a deficit.
Market implications
The external balance is a component of GDP and a signal of competitiveness. Denmark traditionally runs trade surpluses, feeding a current-account surplus that underpins the structural strength of the Danish krone (DKK), which is pegged to the euro.
Limitations
The figures are not final: each release tends to revise earlier periods and the data come with a lag. They can be distorted by goods trade that does not cross the Danish border (merchanting) and by one-off shipments such as those in the shipping sector.
