What it is
Measures the share of the Dominican Republic's labour force that is jobless and actively seeking work. It comes from the Central Bank's Continuous National Labour Force Survey (ENCFT) and is the benchmark gauge of the labour market.
How it's calculated
Calculated as the unemployed divided by the labour force, in per cent, following ILO methodology from a continuous household sample. The annual figure averages the quarterly results.
Market implications
A falling rate accompanies the expansionary phase of an economy closely tied to tourism, free-trade zones and remittances. The Central Bank watches it alongside inflation when setting rates, though informal employment cushions its direct market impact.
Limitations
High informality means the rate does not fully reflect underemployment. Being survey-based and annual, it carries sampling error and is subject to methodological revisions.
