What it is
Measures the share of Ecuador's labour force that is without a job but available for and actively seeking work. It is published by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) from its employment survey.
How it's calculated
Derived from the National Survey of Employment, Unemployment and Underemployment (ENEMDU) as the unemployed over the labour force times 100, following ILO criteria and reported as an annual average.
Market implications
In a dollarised economy with no independent monetary policy, employment is a direct gauge of activity and household welfare. The open unemployment rate is low but misleading: the real issue is underemployment and informal work, which should be watched alongside it.
Limitations
The open unemployment rate downplays labour weakness because it ignores widespread underemployment and informality. It is subject to sampling error, seasonality and methodological revisions to the ENEMDU survey.
