Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
GDP measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Egypt and is the broadest gauge of the size and growth of its economy. It is published by the Ministry of Planning and the statistics agency CAPMAS.
How it's calculated
Estimated by reconciling the output, expenditure and income approaches in real terms, and reported by fiscal year (July to June) as well as by quarter. Growth is released relative to the same period a year earlier.
Market implications
It is the benchmark for Egypt's cycle, the largest Arab economy by population, sensitive to Suez Canal traffic, tourism and remittances. Solid growth supports the pound and gives the Central Bank of Egypt room amid its fight with inflation.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and revisions, and high inflation complicates the conversion to real terms. Exchange-rate distortions and volatile revenues (Suez, energy, tourism) can cloud the reading.
