What it is
It is the average annual inflation rate for Ethiopia: the average change in consumer prices over the year, distinct from the year-end rate. It measures the average rise in the household basket of goods and services across the full year.
How it's calculated
It is computed by comparing the average consumer price index level of one year with the previous one, based on regular price collection across a sample weighted by household spending. Comparable cross-country figures come from the IMF's annual estimates.
Market implications
High inflation sharply erodes purchasing power and can force the central bank to tighten policy. In Ethiopia food inflation carries a very high weight, so harvests, the birr exchange rate and import conditions are decisive.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency, revisable figure. As an annual average it smooths peaks and can mask recent accelerations; the high food weight and limited data availability increase volatility and measurement uncertainty.
