Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Ethiopia over a year. It is the broadest gauge of its economy, compiled by the national statistical authorities and often complemented by international-body estimates.
How it's calculated
It is estimated from the output, expenditure and income sides following international standards, tracked on Ethiopia's fiscal-year basis. It is released in real terms, with the usual reading being the year-on-year (YoY) change in GDP, where agriculture carries heavy weight.
Market implications
Ethiopia ranks among Africa's fastest-growing economies, so the reading interests investors and multilateral bodies as a sign of convergence. Solid growth supports debt sustainability and the currency (the birr) and underpins the policy of the National Bank of Ethiopia.
Limitations
Data are released with a marked lag and subject to wide revisions, and statistical reliability is limited. The large weight of subsistence agriculture and the informal economy makes capturing real activity difficult, and official figures may differ from those of external bodies.
