Release
Published annually, referring to a specific date in the year.
What it is
Measures the total population of Ethiopia and how it evolves over time. It is compiled by the Ethiopian Statistical Service (formerly the Central Statistical Agency) and is a structural indicator underpinning ratios such as GDP per capita and population density.
How it's calculated
The figure comes from the population and housing censuses and from demographic projections updated with births, deaths and migration. It is reported as the population at an annual reference date.
Market implications
In a fast-growing economy such as Ethiopia's, population trends drive the potential labour force, domestic demand and pressure on infrastructure and basic services. It is a structural rather than a market indicator.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency figure with widely spaced and often delayed censuses, so intercensal numbers are projections carrying notable uncertainty and subject to revision, especially across hard-to-cover rural areas.
