What it is	An index that tracks the volume of output of the construction sector (civil engineering and building) in the euro area. Published by Eurostat, it is a real-activity indicator sensitive to the investment cycle and to credit. It comes in two variants: the month-on-month change on the seasonally adjusted figure and the year-on-year change on the working-day adjusted figure.
How it's calculated	Eurostat aggregates the volume production indices (NACE Rev. 2, section F - Construction) reported by national statistics offices, weighting them by each country's share, with 2021=100 as the base. The month-on-month change uses the seasonally and calendar adjusted series; the year-on-year change uses the working-day adjusted series (without seasonal adjustment).
Market implications	A sustained fall in construction output anticipates weakness in residential and non-residential investment and usually precedes a cooling of sector employment. A rise signals expanding construction activity, which is highly sensitive to interest rates (mortgages and project finance) and to business confidence, with implications for ECB policy.
Limitations	A volatile series month to month (weather, working-day calendar, the seasonality of civil engineering) and subject to significant revisions in later releases. The aggregate does not separate residential building from civil engineering, and the euro area result can be heavily swayed by a few large countries.
