What it is
The Euro Area's population records the total number of inhabitants of the countries that share the euro and its evolution over time. It is a structural indicator that underpins many economic and social ratios (GDP per capita, density, per-capita rates, etc.).
How it's calculated
It is compiled by Eurostat by aggregating national figures, drawn from censuses and population statistics and updated with births, deaths and net migration. The population is typically given as of 1 January of each year.
Market implications
Population trends shape the euro area's potential growth, the labour market, consumption and the sustainability of pension and healthcare spending, factors the ECB and European authorities keep in view over the long term.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency figure, and intercensal estimates are subject to revision. As an aggregate of several countries, it can combine national methodologies and be affected by changes in euro-area membership.
