Release
First Monday of the month, around 10:30 CET (the index covers the current month)
What it is
Gauges the mood of around 1,000 institutional and retail investors towards the eurozone economy. Published by the German research firm Sentix, its headline Overall Index combines investors' assessment of current conditions with their six-month expectations. It is the first sentiment reading released each month.
How it's calculated
A diffusion-balance survey run over the weekend before release; the headline index blends a current-situation component with an expectations component. A positive reading signals net optimism, a negative one net pessimism.
Market implications
A leading gauge of the eurozone cycle and of market mood, released ahead of the ZEW, ifo and PMI surveys, so it offers the month's first steer. A stronger-than-expected print tends to support the euro and European equities.
Limitations
As an investor-sentiment survey it is highly volatile and heavily swayed by recent stock-market moves, so it can mirror market mood more than underlying economic fundamentals.
