About this indicator

SourceStatistics Finland
FrequencyMensual
Release Aproximadamente 30 dias despues del fin del mes de referencia.
What it isTracks the change in the prices of goods Finland exports and imports. The export price index captures the f.o.b. border selling price of Finnish goods sold abroad, while the import price index captures the c.i.f. border purchase price of goods bought abroad. Both are published by Statistics Finland as part of its producer price index system.
How it's calculatedCompiled from the prices of a sample of foreign trade transactions, weighted by Finland's export and import structure, with 2021=100 as the base year. The headline reading is the year-on-year (YoY) change.
Market implicationsThe gap between the two indices (the terms of trade) shows whether Finland is gaining or losing purchasing power in its foreign trade: when export prices rise faster than import prices, the terms of trade improve. It is a gauge of imported price pressures relevant to the inflation outlook.
LimitationsHighly sensitive to energy and imported commodity prices, so it can be volatile from month to month. It does not separate price effects from volume effects and is subject to revision.
