Around the middle of the month following the reference period.
What it is
France's manufacturing production measures the change in output of the manufacturing sector, the subset of industrial production that excludes mining, energy and water. It is published by INSEE as a cyclical gauge of the pulse of processing industry.
How it's calculated
It is built as a volume index against a base year (index 100), aggregating manufacturing branches weighted by their share of value added. The data are calendar- and seasonally-adjusted, with month-on-month (MoM) and year-on-year (YoY) changes.
Market implications
Manufacturing production is highly cyclical, so its swings tend to be faster and sharper than those of the wider economy and foreshadow its direction. In France it is used to take the temperature of industry and as an input to quarterly GDP.
Limitations
It is subject to revision and volatile, sensitive to the number of working days and to one-off factors in specific sectors (plant shutdowns, aerospace), so it is best read as a trend rather than on a single month.
