What it is	The Basic Monthly Wage (SMB) measures the evolution of the base wage of private-sector employees in France, excluding bonuses and overtime. It is a key gauge of labour costs and household income, and is published by INSEE.
How it's calculated	INSEE estimates it from its quarterly survey of activity and employment conditions of the workforce (Acemo), reported as an index and as a change (typically quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year).
Market implications	Wages are at once the main component of household income and a large share of firms' costs, so their path is decisive for consumption and for the cost-driven inflationary pressures the ECB monitors.
Limitations	It is a quarterly figure, sensitive to the composition of employment and to seasonal factors, and subject to revision. As it captures only the base wage, it excludes bonuses and overtime, so it can differ from actual take-home pay.
