What it is
Measures the share of Georgia's labour force that is without a job but available for and seeking work. It is compiled by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat) and is the main labour market indicator.
How it's calculated
Calculated as the unemployed over the labour force times 100 from the Labour Force Survey, under ILO criteria and as an annual average. The 2020 revision stopped counting many subsistence agricultural self-employed as employed.
Market implications
Georgia carries high structural unemployment, especially urban and youth, so the figure weighs on confidence and investment appeal. A fall supports the lari and sentiment; the National Bank of Georgia weighs employment alongside inflation in its policy.
Limitations
The weight of subsistence agricultural self-employment complicates measurement, and methodological revisions have altered the series. It is subject to sampling error and poorly captures underemployment and informality.
