What it is	Preliminary Consumer Price Index for the German state of Bavaria, published by its regional statistical office. It is a flash release that comes out a few hours before the national German CPI for the same month and helps anticipate it, since Bavaria carries weight in the national basket.
How it's calculated	A price survey of a basket of goods and services representative of the state, using the same methodology as the national German CPI but restricted to prices observed within Bavaria. Monthly and year-on-year changes are published.
Market implications	It serves as a preview of the national German CPI, released the same day a few hours later: several large states printing in line with expectations reduce the surprise in the national figure, which is closely watched by the market and the ECB.
Limitations	It covers only the state, not the whole of Germany; the figure is preliminary (vorläufig) and may be revised in the final release a few days later.
